Project Narrative

The concept of "transition and flexibility" refers to the ability to adapt to changes and navigate various scenarios effectively. It involves being able to adjust to new situations and challenges, and being open to new ideas and perspectives. The mobile tea house explores transition as there is a difference in patterns as you travel through the space creating a ordinary to extraordinary experience.

A tea ceremony is a special moment through which this mobile tea house embodies, by creating more private and intimate setting due to the increase of height. This project involved exploring different types of fold influenced by origami through multiple iterations of paper modelling. This was important as part of the goal was to compress and decompress the model in order to be able to transport the tea house.

Overall, the concept of transition and flexibility emphasizes the importance of being adaptable and resilient in the face of change. By cultivating these qualities, individuals can better navigate and participate in tea ceremonies.

Project Length: 1 Week

The Origami Tea House was constructed at a 1:1 scale by the Japanese students from the Hiroshima Institute of Technology using varying CNC machinery.

Using traditional Japanese paper, washi paper was made using multiple layers allowing the model to be folded improving it’s structural integrity.

In May 2023, the Origami Tea House was exhibited at the G7 Hiroshima Summit which is a prestigious event that discusses world challenges such as climate crisis, peace and other matters. It hosted international and local leaders. The parametric design created an intimate space for Ueda the Tea Master to host participants to be involved in a tea ceremony.
